This book blends memoir, historical account, and cultural analysis to tell the story of how Black excellence has been both encouraged and exploited in American history. I found this account both moving and informative. My only note is that, based on title alone, I expected this book to focus more black excellence and prodigies in general and less on the author’s specific experience. That said, I found Bennett’s own experiences engaging and beautifully delivered by the author as narrator. Would recommend to others interested in the topic, or just looking to expand their mindset around race or encouraging giftedness.
